Learn how to make garlic bread with sliced bread! It's super quick, easy, and delicious. Serve alongside spaghetti, pasta, chili, or soup.

    a slice of garlic bread.

    Why you'll love it

Homemade garlic bread with sliced bread is super quick and simple! It doesn't take forethought or planning, and calls for pantry staples.

You can use any kind of sliced bread you have on hand. White bread, sourdough, whole grain, or even gluten-free bread!

It's as easy as mixing up an impromptu garlic butter, slathering it on sliced bread, and throwing it in the oven. Super simple recipes are super awesome.

I like to broil it at the end, to achieve that crisp, golden brown exterior. Just be sure to keep a hawk-eye on it, the broiler is crazy hot and the line between beautiful caramelization and burnt is paper thin.

    Key Ingredients

a bowl with butter, spices, fresh garlic.

Sliced bread - Any kind of sliced bread works great! I typically have a sturdy whole grain or gluten-free loaf so that's what I used. White, whole grain, sourdough, or Texas toast are good options.

Unsalted butter - For that buttery flavor and crisp, golden caramelization! Be sure to let the butter sit out to soften first so it's easy to mix with the garlic/spices.

Spices - I keep it simple with garlic powder and Italian seasoning. There's plenty of room for customization here though. You can swap the Italian seasoning with other herbs or spices.

Garlic - I used one garlic clove, but you can use two for an extra garlicky flavor.

How to make garlic bread with sliced bread

It's super simple! Before you start, preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Arrange sliced bread: Place the sliced bread on the sheet pan in an even layer. You can double this recipe if you want. Just use 8 slices of bread and a regular sized sheet pan. (Remember to double the garlic butter too!)

Make garlic butter: In a medium bowl, combine the softened butter, garlic powder, salt, Italian seasoning, and fresh garlic. Mix well with a spoon.

    • spoon mixing butter and spices.
    • garlic butter in a bowl.

Top sliced bread: Use an offset spatula to spread an even layer of garlic butter on top of each slice of bread. It should cover the entire surface of the bread.

hand slathering sliced bread with butter.

Bake & broil: Place the sheet pan in the preheated oven for 6 minutes. The butter will be melted at this point, but the bread won't be golden brown yet. Next change the oven setting to broil and watch the bread like a hawk while it turns golden brown. It should only take a minute or less.

    • four slices of bread with garlic butter on it.

Serve: Sprinkle each slice with kosher salt and then enjoy immediately!

Tips for making homemade garlic bread with sliced bread

    • Do not walk away from the oven when you broil it. The broiler is SUPER hot and works quickly. You need to watch your bread during this time and remove it from the oven when it reaches the color/caramelization you prefer.
    • No need to go crazy with the butter. Just a nice even layer on each slice will do it. Otherwise the bread will taste greasy/soft, instead of crisp.
    • Feel free to double or triple this recipe. I only needed four slices of bread, you can easily make 8 or 12. Just follow the same steps but double or triple the ingredients.

    Variations

    • Bread - The only requirement for this recipe is sliced bread! You can use any type or flavor you want.
    • Gluten-free - Use a gluten-free brand of sliced bread. My favorite is Canyon Bakehouse Mountain White or 7 Grain. Just be sure to let it thaw first.
    • Parmesan - Sprinkle shredded parmesan cheese on top of the garlic butter before you put the bread in the oven.
    • Garlic - If you like your bread extra garlicky, feel free to up the garlic powder or minced garlic.

    Storing Tips

    • Garlic bread is best served fresh, which is why I only make as much as I need. That being said, if you do have extras, store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Don't store it until it's completely cool!
    • To reheat, wrap leftover garlic bread in foil and bake at 350 degrees until warm.
