healthy apple crisp with vanilla ice cream on top

Normally I'm a die-hard chocolate fan but come cold weather I crave apple desserts. There's just something warm, cozy, and satisfying about a healthy apple crumble!

Not only is this one made with wholesome ingredients like rolled oats, almond flour, and maple syrup, but it's scrummy too!

This healthy apple crisp is perfect if you apple pick religiously! We go every year and this crumble is what follows (or this applesauce!). I like to use Fuji, Honeycrisp, or a combination of apples.

Why you'll love this healthy apple crumble recipe:

    • It's sweetened with coconut sugar and maple syrup!
    • It's a breeze to make!
    • Naturally vegan & gluten-free
    • Topped with a buttery, crumb topping

    Ingredients

This healthy apple oat crumble requires simple ingredients.

    Apple Filling

Apples: Any apple variety works, but a sweeter variety requires less sugar. I used Fuji apples, but Gala, Honeycrisp, and Pink Lady are great options. Granny smith apples will result in a much tarter filling.

Tapioca flour: Tapioca flour acts as a thickener for all the juices in this recipe. Cornstarch should work fine too.

Cinnamon: Cinnamon and apples are the perfect match! Apple pie spice is a great substitute too.

Maple syrup: A small amount of maple syrup adds the perfect sweetness for this crisp recipe.

Lemon juice: For best results, use fresh-squeezed lemon juice. It has a bright, acidic flavor that complements the sweetness of the apples.

Salt: A little bit of salt accentuates sweetness!

    Healthy Crumble Topping

Almond flour: I love using this nutty flour in crisps and crumbles! This healthy flour has a great texture and taste. Don't replace it with whole wheat flour. It's not a 1:1 ratio and the recipe may not come out right.

Old-fashioned oats: Oats add fiber and a chewy texture to the crumb topping! If you have Celiac disease or gluten intolerance, be sure to use gluten-free labeled oats.

Coconut sugar: Coconut sugar has a caramel-like sweetness to it! Brown sugar works too.

Maple syrup: Maple syrup is less processed than white sugar and it contains minerals and antioxidants. It pairs perfectly with apples.

Salt: Don't forget the salt. It enhance all the sweet flavors.

    How to make it

This healthy apple crumble with oats is incredibly simple to whip up. Here's how:

Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven and spray your baking dish.

Combine ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ingredients for the apple filling.

Make the topping: Combine the topping ingredients in a bowl. Use your hands to mix together until it forms a crumble.

Top apples: Spread the crumble evenly over the apples.

Bake: Bake the apple crumble with oats for 30 minutes. Carefully cover the crumble with aluminum foil to prevent the topping from getting too brown. Bake 35 more minutes.

Enjoy: Enjoy by itself or with vanilla ice cream!

    Variations

    • Nuts: Add ½ cup of chopped nuts to the crumble mixture. Pecans and walnuts are great options!
    • Coconut oil: You can replace the coconut oil with butter or vegan butter.

    FAQs

    Is an apple crumble healthy?

It's still a dessert, but this apple crumble is healthier than a traditional one. It's made with heart-healthy almond flour, fiber-rich oats, and maple syrup.

    Recipe Tips

    • I prefer to peel the apples, but you can leave the nutrient-rich peels on if you like!
    • Top with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or coconut whipped cream for an indulgent treat!
    • Don't forget to cover the baking dish with aluminum foil. This keeps the crumble from browning too quickly. Almond flour tends to brown up much quicker than traditional flour.

      5 stars
Since becoming gluten free almost 10 yrs ago I have madd a LOT of fruit crisps. I even tried this one before but did not have the coconut sugar or almond flour so I substituted maple syrup and gf baking mix. The original recipe is the best!! I did add 1 Tbl of coconut sugar and 1 tsp if vanilla extract to my apples. I also double the cinnamon making sure it is in the crumble mix and apples. I definitely will make this again.
