A homemade frosted coffee made by blending chilled cold brew with vanilla ice cream until smooth and creamy. It’s a simple, two-ingredient copycat of the Chick-fil-A classic!
What is a frosted coffee?
When I mention a frosted coffee, I’m specifically referring to Chick-fil-A’s Frosted Coffee - a blended drink made with their unsweetened iced coffee and vanilla soft serve.
The result is a thick, creamy frozen coffee beverage that tastes similar to a coffee milkshake. It has no milkshake base in it though - just coffee and ice cream.

Chick Fil A Frosted Coffee
It's say to say I've been obsessed with Chick-Fil-A frozen coffees for years now! (I also love their kale crunch salad!!) That being said, they aren't cheap! While I still like to splurge on one every now and then, I prefer to make mine at home now.
This homemade frosted coffee tastes just like the original. It's thick, creamy, and downright addictive!
Key Ingredients
- Unsweetened cold brew - One of the best things about making this at home is that you can customize the caffeine level however you like: full-caf, half-caf, or decaf. Chick-fil-A doesn’t offer a decaf iced coffee option, so this gives you more flexibility. Just be sure to use unsweetened cold brew, since the ice cream adds plenty of sweetness on its own.
- Vanilla ice cream - Look for a full-fat, hard vanilla ice cream. Some brands melt faster than others and for this recipe, you want one that's harder to scoop and doesn't melt quickly!
How to Make a Frosted Coffee
It is SUPER easy!
- Place the cold brew and vanilla ice cream in the blender. Make sure you don't leave the ice cream to melt on the counter first.
- Blend until creamy and smooth. Don't blend too long! Ice cream melts quicker than frozen fruit or ice.
- Pour into a glass and enjoy immediately!
Expert Tips
- Do NOT add ice for two reasons. First, blending long enough to crush the ice will melt the ice cream. Second, if you don’t blend it enough, you’ll end up with little chunks of ice throughout the drink. I tried it myself, and it doesn’t work!
- For a thicker coffee, increase the ratio of ice cream to coffee. More ice cream will give you a thicker drink. More cold brew will give you a thinner one!
- If you want a thicker coffee but more coffee flavor, add instant espresso powder instead of cold brew. This will give you extra coffee flavor without thinning out the drink.
Yes, Chick-fil-A currently doesn’t offer a decaf iced coffee or decaf frosted coffee. Their frosted coffee is made using their regular iced coffee, and in my opinion, it’s pretty strong.
You can absolutely use another flavor of ice cream! It won't taste like a classic frosted coffee but it will taste delicious! Chocolate, coffee, cookie dough, cookies and cream, or caramel are all great options!
Absolutely! All you have to do is swap the vanilla ice cream with your favorite brand of dairy-free ice cream. Since ice cream is a main ingredient, make sure you like the flavor of the ice cream before you use it.
Toppings
- My favorite way to top a frosted coffee is with whipped cream! Even when I go to Chick-fil-a, I order it with whipped cream on top. You should try it!
- Sprinkle chocolate shavings or cookie crumbs on top of the whipped cream.
- Drizzle with chocolate or caramel sauce on top!
