Slather this simple honey butter on all your carb-laden treats! It's perfect for buttermilk biscuits, waffles, pancakes, and more. It takes 2 minutes to make and it's lusciously smooth.
Simple Honey Butter:
Honey butter is one of my favorite breakfast mashups! Sticky honey with it's candy-like sweetness and velvety smooth butter. Yum!
This luscious spread is perfect for flaky biscuits, crispy waffles, or fluffy pancakes! It's only three ingredients (including salt!) and I bet you have them in your fridge and pantry.
Key Ingredients:
- Unsalted butter - I buy unsalted butter and add my own salt. It gives me control over the quantity and quality. Make sure your butter is soft before you start.
- Honey - There are more than 300 varieties of honey. Clover honey is the most popular and common in the United States. You can use any variety you like. Orange blossom and wildflower honey are delicious too! The darker the honey, the stronger the flavor.
- Kosher salt - A little bit of salt enhances flavor! I recommend kosher of flaky sea salt for this recipe.
How to Make Honey Butter:
Honey butter is a type of compound butter. Compound butter means you've spruced up your butter with sweet or savory ingredients. Here's a few popular examples of compound butter:
- Cinnamon butter
- Lemon dill butter
- Garlic herb butter
It's super easy to make! So long as your butter is soft, it only takes 2 minutes. You can mix it by hand or with an electric hand mixer.
- In a large bowl, combine the butter, honey, and salt.
- Use a hand mixer or small spatula to vigorously mix the butter and honey until luscious and smooth.
- Serve immediately with even more honey or chill for later.
Variations:
Sweet butter tastes great with additional mix-ins! Try one of these simple variations:
- Cinnamon - Add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
- Powdered sugar - For a sweeter spread, add a few tablespoons of powdered sugar.
- Cayenne - Add ¼ teaspoon of cayenne for a spicy kick.
- Orange zest - Add ½ teaspoon of orange zest.
Ways to Enjoy Honey Butter:
Eat it by the spoonful! I kid, don't do that. But seriously, this stuff is good on everything. Here's a few ideas to get you started:
- Slather it on waffles, pancakes, or buttermilk biscuits!
- Smear it on a slice of sweet cornbread.
- Spread it on toast, English muffins, or a toasted bagel.
- It tastes amazing on banana bread, pumpkin bread, or any tea cake.
- Scoop onto a hot baked sweet potato.
- Drizzle it on steamed or roasted carrots!
Storage:
- Store honey butter in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 1 month. Let it soften at room temperature before using.
- For longer storage, freeze it in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.
Do I have to use softened butter?
Yes, you don't want to use cold or melted butter. Cold butter is difficult to mix (especially by hand!) and melted butter won't whip! You want to let your butter sit out for at least an hour to let it come to room temperature.
How to Soften Butter Quickly:
If you forget to let your butter sit out, don't worry. I do this all the time. There is a very simple fix - the microwave! The key is to only microwave the butter long enough for it to get soft, not melt.
- Place the stick of butter in the microwave.
- Microwave in 5-second increments, turning the butter so it heats evenly.
- Do this until you can easily press into the butter. It's better to underheat it, than to melt it!
You can use this method for any baked good that calls for softened butter!
